The sound you make will be exactly like the one coming out of the mouth of one of the main characters in Us. YES, it was extremely annoying. Well, not as annoying as the two teenage girls who sat next to me ten minutes after the movie started. They checked their phones every two minutes, played with their hair, whispered and giggled with each other, and one of them took half the movie to open a package of peanut M&Ms. It was all I could do to keep from ripping the package out of her hand.
I really, really, really, really wanted to like the movie. I really, really, really, really mostly didn’t. I’m just going to say it: it was boring. I can do boring for a bit because I get that it takes a little time to establish the story; however, after about fifteen minutes, I started paying more attention to the teenage girls than what was happening on the screen.
Us is not a bad movie; it’s a good movie. The thing is, I was expecting a great movie, so I was disappointed and that’s probably not fair to Jordan Peele, who wrote and directed it. He also wrote and directed Get Out which was awesome. Get Out was Charmin 3-ply toilet paper. Us was Costco 1-ply toilet paper. Yeah, toilet paper is toilet paper. Charmin and Costco get the job done BUT given a choice, I’ll go Charmin every single time.
As any multi-millionaire baseball player will tell you, it’s impossible to hit a home run every single time you step up to the plate. For me, Us was not a home run. It was a double, BUT Jordan Peele is most definitely stepping up to the plate in a big way. He more than deserves all the praise he’s received.
I loved the music and the comedy; however, some of the comedy seemed misplaced and more than a little forced. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t funny.
There were a couple of scenes that really had my blood pumping. They weren’t jump-out-at-you-and- scare-you scenes; they were more subtle, but the scenes had me squirming in my seat even more than the teenagers were squirming and that’s A LOT.
I’m sure there were many layers of the movie I just didn’t get. After all, I never finished junior college and that’s not Jordan Peele’s fault. Please go see it and then explain it to me. The mumbling main character actually does attempt to explain some of what’s going on, but this is what it sounded like to me: “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Um diddle diddle, diddle um, diddle ay. Um diddle diddle, diddle um, diddle ay. Um diddle diddle, diddle um, diddle ay. Um diddle diddle, diddle um, diddle ay.”
